Alexei Popyrin Dumped Out Of Australian Open
Russian Andrey Rublev Wins In Straight Sets
Russian 5th seed Andrey Rublev dumped Aussie hope Alexei Popyrin out of the Australian Open in straight sets on Thursday night.
The 22-year-old wildcard had upset 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in the first round but was no match for Rublev, going down 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 48 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.
Rublev will face Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round on Saturday.
Rublev Too Strong For Popyrin
Rublev was simply too strong for Popyrin, hitting 32 winners to the Aussie's nine and breaking his serve five times.
Popyrin showed some fight in the third set, breaking Rublev's serve to get back to 4-4 but the Russian broke straight back and served out the match.
The loss brings to an end Popyrin's impressive run at the Australian Open. He had never won a match at a grand slam before this year but has now made it to the second round of a major for the first time.
