Nice hammer 'ashamed' Saint-Etienne 8-0
Ligue 1 strugglers Saint-Etienne were thrashed 8-0 at Nice on Wednesday, equaling the record for the biggest defeat in the French top flight.
The visitors, who have not won in Ligue 1 since August and are bottom of the table with just one point from 10 games, were 4-0 down at half-time and conceded four more goals after the break.
Nice took the lead in the 14th minute through Andy Delort, and Kasper Dolberg doubled their advantage 10 minutes later. Rares Ilie added a third in the 30th minute, and Delort scored his second in the 38th minute.
After the break, Hicham Boudaoui made it 5-0 in the 50th minute, Dolberg scored his second in the 60th minute, Alexis Claude-Maurice added a seventh in the 73rd minute, and Amine Gouiri completed the rout in the 82nd minute.
The defeat equals the record for the biggest defeat in Ligue 1, which was set by Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 when they beat Dijon 8-0.
Saint-Etienne coach Claude Puel said he was "ashamed" of his team's performance.
"I am ashamed of what we produced tonight," Puel said. "We were not up to the task, and we were punished severely.
"We have to take responsibility for this defeat, and we have to work hard to improve our performances."
Nice coach Christophe Galtier said he was "very satisfied" with his team's performance.
"We played a very good game tonight," Galtier said. "We were clinical in front of goal, and we defended well.
"I am very satisfied with the performance of my players."
The defeat leaves Saint-Etienne bottom of Ligue 1 with just one point from 10 games.
Nice are up to fourth place in the table with 19 points from 10 games.
