An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of El Salvador on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to El Salvador's Civil Protection Service.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of San Salvador, at a depth of about 35 miles (56 kilometers).

The earthquake was felt throughout El Salvador, as well as in neighboring Guatemala and Honduras.

Experts say that the earthquake was likely caused by the movement of the Cocos Plate beneath the Caribbean Plate.

El Salvador is located in a seismically active region, and earthquakes are common.

In 2001, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed more than 900 people in El Salvador.
