Rays Walk Off Victory Ends Diamondbacks Win Streak

WEB Rays Walk-Off Victory Ends Diamondbacks Win Streak

DeLuca Scores on McCarthy Error

The Diamondbacks' season-high six-game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Friday night in the series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays walked off with a 5-4 victory thanks to a fielding error by center fielder Jake McCarthy.

With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Brandon Lowe hit a single to right field. McCarthy fielded the ball cleanly but was unable to make a strong throw to the plate. Jonny DeLuca, who was running on contact, was able to sprint in and score the winning run.

Unearned Runs Doom Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks took advantage of two unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game. Ketel Marte singled in a run and Daulton Varsho drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run.

However, the Diamondbacks were unable to hold on to the lead. Lowe's single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Rays the walk-off victory.

Missed Opportunity for Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks had a chance to extend their winning streak to seven games, but they were unable to capitalize on several opportunities.

  • In the top of the ninth inning, the Diamondbacks had the bases loaded with one out but were only able to score one run.
  • In the top of the 10th inning, the Diamondbacks had two runners on base with one out but were unable to score.

The Diamondbacks will look to bounce back on Saturday night when they face the Rays in the second game of the series.
