What is Bentonite?

Bentonite is a type of absorbent swelling clay primarily composed of montmorillonite, a type of smectite mineral. It can be further classified into two main types: Na-montmorillonite and Ca-montmorillonite. Bentonite originated from the Benton Formation in the Fort Benton clays of Montana, USA.
